Ante-post favourite
Novel Legend was the last horse to not make the cut for Friday’s 17-runner Tote
Chester Cup.
The frustration of his connections will likely be increased before the race gets under way as a non-runner or two must be a possibility given that the ground has softened considerably since the declarations were made.
Times at Chester on Wednesday were slow after a deluge of rain, with Savethelastdance seemingly the only runner to cope with conditions in the Cheshire Oaks. She won in a time almost 14 seconds outside the standard, yet still crossed the line 22 lengths clear of her nearest pursuer. Winning jockey Ryan Moore was most complimentary but observed “the others gave up”.
Savethelastdance won by a wide margin (focusonracing.com)
Arrest won the Derby Trial in a time 16 seconds outside the standard, in a race where the five runners were separated by 116 lengths.
Savethelastdance is now a general 13-8 for the Oaks, with Arrest a best price of 7-1 for the Derby (some firms offer just 4-1). But there is plenty more water to flow under the bridge over the coming days and I'd beware getting stuck in, not least because conditions at Epsom may be entirely different.
Testing ground seems assured for Friday’s highlight, with more rain forecast. That will obviously make it more of a stamina test and take the draw out of things, to an extent, with a low stall perhaps not as essential as perceived.
For example, when the race was on heavy ground, in 2019, the first four home were drawn 16, 12, 7 and 17.
Here are four key contenders, in preferred order. Sky
Bet are offering six places six places for each-way purposes with most other firms going five.
1 CALL MY BLUFF
Chester form: 132. Best odds: a general 10-1
The Dominic French Davis-trained six-year-old looks to have everything in his favour. He’s got excellent course form, relishes the mud, is drawn low and gets weight from all bar one of his rivals.
Moreover, he should be spot-on for this after chasing home the well-handicapped Novel Legend at Newbury last month when he drew nine lengths clear of the third home.
Call My Bluff is only 3lb higher than when coming from a long way back to be a close third in last year’s Chester Plate on good ground when making his seasonal return, and looked a tad unlucky when beaten a head in another valuable handicap over course and distance in September.
John Egan knows him well and can scoop his second win in the race, having guided Admiral to a surprise win in 2006.
Call My Bluff has finished first or second in eight of his 14 races on turf
2 CALLING THE WIND
Chester form: --. Best odds: a general 11-1
Richard Hughes and Jamie Spencer have each ridden two Chester Cup winners, and now team up with a challenger who, like Call My Bluff, ticks plenty of boxes.
Calling The Wind stays all day, as you would expect from a horse who has twice been placed in the Queen Alexandra Stakes at Royal Ascot. But he’s also no sluggard and also has some smart handicap form to his name over much shorter distances.
That makes him an ideal candidate for Chester, a track that demands a blend of speed and stamina.
He’s perhaps not won the races he might have on turf – two wins from 17 starts – but he’s slipped back to the mark he was third off in the 2021 Cesarewitch and he shaped well on his return at Wolverhampton.
3 METIER
Chester form: --. Best odds: a general 11-1
This mudlark was a leading fancy for the Supreme Novices’ Hurdle after routing his rivals in the Tolworth at the start of 2021 but he ran poorly at Cheltenham and has subsequently lost his way over jumps.
There’s been nothing wrong with his past two turf efforts on the Flat, though, as he won last year’s November Handicap (on heavy ground) and made the progressive Wise Eagle dig deep in a valuable contest at Musselburgh last time. He was partnered by Saffie Osborne on both occasions, and she keeps the ride.
Wise Eagle franked the form when runner-up in the Sagaro Stakes and is bound for the Gold Cup, so Metier’s 3lb rise in not unreasonable. There’s little doubt he will cope with underfoot conditions and, while unraced beyond 1m6f on the level, he promises to stay.
4 FALCON EIGHT
Chester form: 15. Best odds: 6-1 with William Hill
Seeks to become the tenth two-time winner of a race first run in 1824 – but only fourth to regain his crown.
Falcon Eight swept through from of the pace when winning two years ago under Frankie Dettori but the combination could not repeat the trick last year; finishing a never-nearer fifth after getting caught too far out of their ground.
With Dettori heading to America, it’s Ryan Moore who will be on board this time and I’d imagine he sit a bit closer to the leaders, not least because otherwise he risks surrendering a decent draw in stall 4.
Falcon Eight seems versatile regards the ground but he’s only 1lb lower than 12 months ago and only one other horse aged older than 7 has won since 1986.
It won’t be a surprise if he again makes his presence felt but he may just be vulnerable to younger rivals with lighter weights.

Phillip Enright was impressed by the work of Senecia who put in a gutsy effort to get his head in front in the An Riocht Chase at Killarney.
A front running ride and the pair weren't for catching with Enright saying "He's got loads of talent & it's great it all came right today" post-race.

James J Braddock got up late to collar Pierre Bonnard on the line in the Cashel Palace Hotel Derby Trial Stakes at Leopardstown.
Stablemate Endorsement led the Aidan O’Brien-trained Pierre Bonnard along at head of the field before Wayne Lordan asked the Camelot colt and Derby hopeful Pierre Bonnard – the 5-6 favourite despite his eclipse in the Ballysax Stakes on his reappearance – to take it up with a furlong to go.
Endorsement was not giving up without a fight, but it was Dylan Brown McMonagale and James J Braddock on the outside that proved to be the danger and the Joseph O’Brien-trained 9-1 shot timed his run perfectly to get up on the line and win by a short head.
Paddy Power slashed James J Braddock to 25-1 from 100-1 for the Betfred Derby on June 6, although O’Brien will not rush into any plans for his winner, with plenty of options now opening up.
“He was tough. He ran a nice race here the first day and we thought he’d come on from the run,” he said.
“We were a bit worried about the fast ground because his maiden win last year was on quite soft ground. You’d have to say that he handled it well.
“Before today we were thinking he might be a horse for the King Edward in Ascot. That’s the race we were working towards, but I suppose we now have to consider other options as well.
“We’ll see how he comes out of it and discuss it with Aziz Kheir (owner). It’s the first horse we’ve had for him, he has a lot of horses in Australia.
“This is going to be a horse that will hopefully turn up in top international races through the course of his career. Today was obviously a big step forward. We’ve always thought he’d love going a mile and a half.”
When it was put to him that it looks like an open Derby, he added: “It’s probably fair to say that, it looks like a relatively open race.
“I thought some of those Chester horses looked pretty good in fairness, but it does look like an open race and I guess this guy is one of the contenders now having won a trial.
“If we did want to go there he has earned his spot. I think we’ll just see how the next week goes and discuss it with Aziz, see how he pulls up and make a plan then.”
Asked if he’d handle Epsom, he said: “I think so, he’s a good traveller. He travelled very well today and I think he potentially could.”

Catalina Delcarpio continued Paddy Twomey's fine form as she returned to winning ways in the Listed Porsche In Support Of Breast Cancer Ireland Amethyst Stakes at Leopardstown.
The four-year-old raced in midfield before going through the gears in the last furlong, taking over and running on well to win by a length and a quarter from Tokenomics.
Twomey said: “Billy said he’d like to drop her in and I said ‘do whatever you want’. She has a lot of class.
“It was maybe trainer error last year, I stretched her out to a mile and four in the Ribblesdale and I’d say she has too much speed for that.
“I said to Billy that we’d start back at a mile. She had a setback after she ran in Ascot so she was just ready to start back when she ran in the Park Express and I thought she’d come forward well from it.
“I think she can step up to 10 furlongs no problem, but she has pace for a mile.
“Her new connections were keen that we win a Listed race before stepping up the grades. She’s done that today so I think we’ll be allowed to do whatever we want now.
“I doubt she’d go for the Lanwades as we have City Of Memphis and One Look as well for that.
“I’d imagine a race like the Pretty Polly would be right up her street.”

City Of Memphis made it two from two this season with a straightforward victory in the Group Three Al Shira’aa Racing “Mutamakina” Stakes at Leopardstown.
California Dreamer pulled them along at the head of the field in the seven-furlong contest, with the Paddy Twomey-trained City Of Memphis covering her every move.
Billy Lee then laid down his challenge at the one pole to take it up in a duel with California Dreamer and Snellen, and the 7-4 favourite’s class shone through as she came home one and a half lengths clear of the fast-finishing Signora. Snellen was a neck further adrift in third.
“She’s a very good filly. We haven’t raced her much and I’m hoping we’ll make up for lost time this year,” said Twomey.
“She’s in the Group Two Lanwades Stud Stakes on Guineas weekend and I think the mile will be no problem.
“She’s a filly that will do very well later in the year, over seven or a mile. I’ll keep her to better tracks.”
