Dave Nevison reveals his best bets for the racing action at Ffos Las, Haydock and Ludlow on Wednesday.
This five-year-old will hopefully outclass these low-grade performers, despite having to carry top weight, as a drop-in class is probably my favourite betting angle, and Seventeen O Four looks a good candidate.
He has run well in two handicaps at a higher level on his past two starts and finished a creditable second on each occasion. He found a heavily backed rival too good on the first of those outings and was no match for a big improver last time.
However, he looks to have moderate, exposed types to beat on Wednesday, now that he is dropped considerably in grade. Fergus Gillard, who claims a handy 3lb, keeps the ride, and I am hopeful that Seventeen O Four can be the first leg of a family double, with his brother riding my selection at Haydock.
This marathon chase has attracted a field of contenders who have been largely disappointing, and this looks a good opportunity for Tim Pat to build on his highly satisfactory chasing debut last time out.
Donald McCain’s six-year-old had shown himself a progressive hurdler over staying trips before he switched to fences last month. He won in good style at Bangor on his penultimate start but had run several good races over three miles before that.
He was dropped down to 2m4f on his chasing debut in February and jumped well plus did his best work late on when powering up the Carlisle hill.
He will be better suited over a mile further here and I expect him to become a force in marathon handicaps in time.
He ran his best race under this jockey on his penultimate start when finishing second to my earlier selection, Tim Pat. That effort was over a trip just short of three miles, and he is back down in trip here having possibly found an extended distance on heavy ground too much last time out.
He has had a wind operation in the interim, which will hopefully bring about some consistency in his runs. Trainer Alistair Ralph is in very good form and this seven-year-old is definitely well enough handicapped to break his maiden here.
